Dr. Patrick Hyatt, M.D., a specialist at The Center for Heartburn and Reflux Disease at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, sets the record straight: they’re myths, and relying on them might exacerbate your heartburn symptoms.

Understanding Heartburn Causes
Heartburn, Dr. Hyatt explains, occurs when stomach acid—produced to aid digestion and kill bacteria—backs up into the esophagus. Acidic foods like wine, coffee, or spicy meals often trigger this discomfort. When combined with stomach acid, these foods create a potent mixture that burns if it reaches the esophagus. Overeating can also contribute to heartburn, as excessive food in the stomach puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter, allowing the mixture to escape.

Why Milk and Bread Might Not Help
Contrary to popular belief, consuming milk or bread during heartburn episodes may worsen symptoms. According to Dr. Hyatt, these additions only add bulk to your stomach, prompting increased stomach acid production.

Effective Relief for Heartburn
For swift relief, Dr. Hyatt recommends over-the-counter histamine blockers like Pepcid or Zantac. These medications block histamine, a chemical that triggers stomach acid production. They typically provide relief within 15 to 30 minutes, as indicated by the drugs’ websites.

Preventing Heartburn
Ideally, preventing heartburn is preferable to treating it. Identifying common triggers, such as spicy or fatty foods, garlic, tomatoes, or certain beverages like coffee or carbonated drinks, is crucial. After consuming trigger foods, chewing non-peppermint gum can increase salivation, neutralize acid, and alleviate discomfort.

Late-night eating can also contribute to heartburn, advises Gastroenterologist Dr. David Poppers, MD, PhD, recommending waiting approximately two hours before lying down. Sleeping in an elevated position can prevent acid from traveling up the esophagus.

If you experience heartburn more than twice a week, it’s essential to consult your doctor. Frequent heartburn may increase the risk of esophageal cancer. Your doctor can monitor symptoms and provide preventative treatment if necessary.
